Populism- Looming Large and Brewing Hot

These days everywhere I look and everyone I come across is heavily influenced and to a certain extent, madly provoked by populist ideals. It made me confused and worried at the same time, following something just because it is popular is risky business. Populist ideals and beliefs could be widely accepted but neither does it make it absolutely right nor absolutely good.

Taking the case of demonetization of 500 and 1000 INR currency notes for instance. As soon as demonetization was brought into effect, all the empty-headed populists started glorifying it stating that it was a masterstroke and that it will greatly prevent black money from heating up the economy. While it did temporarily keep a check on counterfeit currency and corrupt black money hoarders, its long-term effects are more adverse than favorable. In a bid to outsmart the wrongdoers, the plan did widespread collateral damage to the ordinary citizens of the country. Apart from the direct impact of having millions of working-class citizens and small businesses financially suffer and the impact of the economy going for a trend reversing slump; there was an unbelievable change in order that was witnessed. By controlling how much money one can take from the ATM per day, the Government was essentially intruding into the basic freedom of its citizens to spend as much they want on any given day, with so much reserve cash locked up in the banks, imagine the sitting interest and thereby power that banks would have gained out of this. This whole 'going cashless' and Digitization saga gained mileage for corporates like PayTm and Jio Money. So the point I am trying to make is, the demonetization exercise essentially removed quite some monetary power from its ordinary citizens and gave it to the corporates- exactly what a right-leaning Government would do. It also heavily regulated the freedom to use and dispense hard-earned cash at will, a shocking thing to do from a democratically elected Government. But our populists, oblivious to this fact, mindlessly declared demonetization as a blessing and abused anyone who opposed it.

So what would have sane individuals (not populists) done! I'll drive home the point with this work-related example: Whenever we try to pitch/ sell a solution or a recommendation to our Management/ Clients, the first thing we do is a detailed Impact Analysis on how this solution would affect the conversion and revenue numbers, even if it makes a positive impact, how much good would my delta be. This is needed so that the Management can take an informed decision, regardless of however meager the impact may be. This is exactly the question that a sane individual like me would have for the ruling Government when trying to sell the decision to demonetize 14.18 trillion INR to the sane citizens of this country, what impact analysis did the Government give, so that we sane citizens of this country be at-least informed with civility of the impending effects of demonetization that'll rain over our parade. Though one can argue that the outlook for the economy here on now is optimistic, we now have the populists back again trying to re-monetize the country by informing people of our duty to spend more and go cashless wherever possible. "Well yes sure, whatever you say!"

Another instance where Populism provoked a cultural propaganda was the SC ruling over the Jallikattu ban. Populists went ahead to declare war on PETA and AWBI for destroying Tamil culture and that these populists have been Indians for just 70 years but were Tamils for 7000 years. PETA and AWBI as organizations could be corrupt and malaise, which is something but a totally different story. Their job has now and has always been in creating awareness about every form of animal cruelty as it happens, which is exactly what happened with Jallikattu as well. To be fair and honest, PETA does criticize even drinking milk as inhumane and as animal cruelty.  Strangely the Jallikattu issue alone rubbed off our populists in a wrong way who then started a widespread populist movement on the same, which caught up like wildfire. Appealing to the lowest common denominator, the propaganda targeted all Tamils to unite to support Jallikattu and spread hate campaigns on those who try to diminish the Tamil identity. I mean what was that!

My point to drive home here is not one that speaks for or against Jallikattu, but rather on the emotional edginess of populists, rather than being sensible and taking things in the right stride, they paint a rosy picture of populist ideals and vilify everything else. The SC ruling could either be right or wrong or neither, so populists, please study it first before becoming judgmental freaks jumping to hasty conclusions and spreading hate.

Another instance of populism is the omnipresent social media. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram have become platforms for narcissistic self-promoters and populists who find shallow solace in the number of likes and comments they get for their pictures- which BTW rarely is an accurate depiction of their actual lives. While social media has been an extraordinary leap and it sure does put the power of voice into the hands of ordinary people, rarely have I seen people use it to showcase highly inspired content. While some populist content like motivational quotes or entertainment memes or interesting videos do actually benefit people, the potential to use Facebook for far more intellectual and creative stuff still remains underutilized.

The point am trying to drive home here is that populists have turned wonderful platforms such as Facebook into disgusting and vulgar peek holes into their private lives, where they check into airports and hotels, happily lose privacy, post boring and endless selfies, over share mindless details about their life, congratulate themselves on their mediocrity (Status: Finished 10th out of 20 people by running the 10 km fun marathon in 2 hours.. Yay!- "Well congratulations on your mediocrity!!"), publicly defame co-passengers for littering the train/ tracks by posting a picture of him/ them doing the same ("Well ya he may have made a bad choice to litter the train, but who gave you the right to play God and why did you not give him the benefit of doubt!"), et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. What the populists fail to understand is that they are unknowingly giving so much power to the Data Scientists and Social Media Analysts who are wielding it and inching closer toward figuring every minute piece of information that is out there to know about these populists and wrap that data into powerful data assets- assets that will drive many thousands of recommendation engines, personalization products, spying machines, and targeted marketing campaigns. On the contrary, imagine how much of a power vehicle, Facebook or Twitter would be for us, the ordinary people, and the populists if we could only use it to voice an informed opinion, share an intelligent piece of information, creatively engage with connections, put forth a seed of thought and most of all, step up and inspire people. That's where all of this drama needs to head.

The examples are endless. Brexit was a mere populist choice than anything else as well. EU kept the UK and Europe out of war for 70 years now, yet populist parties leveraged and fueled citizens' increasing Euro-skepticism which ultimately led to the staging of the referendum to leave the EU.

So the closing thoughts would be: Whenever you come face to face with a populist ideal, don't trust it. Don't trust it at all. Rather trust your own good judgment. Argue both sides of the case and go by what seems right not by what seems popular. That's the only road to sanity.

All of Life is a Game- The Art of Decision Making III

Sometimes you have to make a choice with consequences you have to live with forever.

- Nokia Ad

So this article is gonna be about the everyday games we play, the people we play them with and the outcomes we see, which none of us might have intended. So first... what exactly is a game?? According to me, a game is just a sequence of decision making situations between us and any number of people, in which our choices affect them and theirs affect us. Add to that the fundamental underlying assumption of any game which is: we will  make our best possible move and we also know that our opponents are gonna make their best possible move too. I mean to say that we are sane/ rational  players and so are our opponents. A classic game : Take Dave and Henry- two sane men locked up in  different jails for the same crime. Each of these men face two choices- either confess crime or claim not guilty. If both confess, each get 3 years of prison time and if none confess, each gets 2 years of prison time. Lets say if one confesses and the other pleads innocence, the one who confessed will only get 1 year of jail time while the other will be 5 years behind bars.

Puzzle (A): Lets say you are Dave's lawyer, what would you suggest him to do?? Confess or remain silent??

Another classic example of a game: Rock Paper Scissors. I am sure all of us have played this when young. We know rock beats scissors which beats paper which in-turn beats rock. Lets turn this into a betting game between you and me. Every time I win, I get Re.1 from you and vice- versa. If both of us show the same item, then it is a draw. Now we know, for every turn, we are faced with three choices: rock, paper, scissors. I know, if I play one item for every turn, lets say I play paper in every turn, or lets say paper is my strategy, then you would learn that paper is my strategy after 2 or 3 turns and would start playing scissors or rather would make scissors your strategy and beat me every turn thereafter. Hence I will not be playing the same strategy in every turn because I am as much game savvy as you are.

Puzzle (B): Is it possible for both of us to win this game?? Will there ever be a win- win situation in such a game?? If yes, why? If no, why?

Another example: A football match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Lets say Real decide to go on an offense and Barça decide to go on a defense. So for Real, its about maximizing the minimum gain  possible even with Barça's defense and for Barça, it is about minimizing the maximum loss possible even with Real's offense. Let's say Real has 2 offense strategies, A and B and Barça has 2 defense strategies C and D. Lets say over the years, Real has found that strategy A is best when Barça plays strategy C and strategy B is best when Barça plays strategy D. So assuming the basic principle of Game Theory that each coach chooses the best strategy for his team assuming the fact that the rival coach is also choosing the best strategy for his team, how is this game going to turn out to be.

Puzzle (C): Is the game going to go on in circles? Can there be a pure strategy for both teams- which if they adhere to throughout the game will yield them the best outcome turn after turn?

Actually the problem with the above example is that the game is not strictly determined, meaning that there is simply no 'SINGLE best possible move (strategy)' for either of the teams, irrespective of the move (strategy) of the opponent team. So when exactly can we call a game to be strictly determined? Lets say there is this one strategy for both Real and Barça which yields their best offense and best defense respectively. So such a strategy or a saddle point (as we call it in mathematical terms), is the optimal strategy for both teams. Such a saddle point if has a value of 0, then the game is said to be 'fair'. If it has a value >0 or <0 then it is 'biased/ unfair' to either of the teams.

Makes me ever wonder, practical life has no 0 valued saddle points. Sad truth. But is it ever possible to find the optimal strategy to solve such a game. Well, you are not off the hook, yet!

The EU Woes: Decreasing Democratic Participation

This article was part of my curricular assignment submitted at Coursera's 'Understanding Europe' by HEC Paris.

The European Union is an association of states counting 28 in number, which emerged after the Second World War, currently inhabited by 500 million citizens, speaking 24 languages and representing the largest trade block in the world. The European Parliament is the only EU institution to be directly elected by the EU citizens through universal adult suffrage. Held once in every 5 years, the Elections see 751 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) from the 28 EU member states getting elected to represent their nation on a European level. The 2014 European Parliament Elections, held between 22- 25 May had a voter turnout of 43.09% as opposed to the opinion poll estimation, which stood at 43.11%. While some reactions consider the voter turnout figure as an achievement of European democracy, with the 2014 Elections being the first election to reverse a decreasing voter turnout trend (2009 Elections had a voter turnout of 43%). Skeptics still discount the 0.09% increase from 2009 as any indication of increased democratic participation. The irony is that even though half of the 28 member states had a voter turnout greater than the EU average of 43.09%, this should be accounted either to compulsory voting (as in Belgium and Luxembourg with turnout of 90%) or to the fact that the European elections coincided with the national elections (as in Lithuania, Greece and Germany; Lithuania’s % change in voter turnout from 2009 stood at a remarkable 24%).

Wanderings in Kannada Desam

A travel document of my wanderings in Karnataka. The Hoysalas ruled Karnataka over a millennium ago and they built many temples across the land between the 11th and 12th century AD. Of these, the most famous are the one in Belur, Halebid and Somanathpur.

Halebid- The Halebid/ Halebeedu temple was called Dhwara Samudra by the Hoysalas, coz there is a huge lake adjoining the temple. The temple is still incomplete and the residing deity is Lord Shiva but no poojas are carried out because the temple is incomplete and in ruins after several attacks from the Sultans of the North and other local vandals- reason why it was renamed as Halebid, meaning city in ruins. The Halebid temple is known for its external beauty.

Belur- This has Lord Vishnu as the residing deity and here poojas carried out, because the temple is complete. The Belur temple is known for its internal beauty and has a model replica standing close by, but sans the intricate rock carvings.

Somnathpur- This temple is located in South Karnataka close to Tamil Nadu border and is missed out in many tourist itineraries.

The carvings in these temples are made out of soft stone which is found deep below the surface. The stone is soft (hence  aided easy carving), when underground, but when exposed to air, it becomes hard. The whole temple is built by locks and interlocks and even now, can be dismantled completely and assembled back.

The Role of our Professional Ecosystem in fostering Women as Front- Runners/ Achievers

This article was originally for Winspiration 2011 conducted by The Indian Women's Leadership Council

The basic design was to have two equal beings, complementing each other with enough similarities such that they find sufficient common ground and with enough differences such that they fuel the most important necessity of life- Change. Here, I was recalling the design of humans. The two beings being: Women and Men. But somewhere in the process, things dint really go as per the design with one being starting to exploit over the other. Sadly even after all these years of humanity, we still don’t exactly conform to the original design. In fact it would be wise to say that civilization as such can be measured as a degree of conformance to this design.

                With this, I bring this article to the 21st century, to the ‘today’, to the ‘right now’. This article does not intend to do root- cause analysis for this non-conformance, if I try to do that, I might have to go back to the ‘long long ago’, so long ago to a time when physical strength and endurance were pre- requisites in the race to being the fittest and ultimately the employable of the two sexes. {Good for us now, we have technologies, machines, robots and other enablers which have tremendously increased the productivity of an average human and perhaps there are not many jobs out there that a man can do and a woman cannot}. Neither is this article intended to establish the beauty of a more equal workplace, but rather this article tries to propose plans to even out the crests and troughs of outdated societal norms and the need to nurture a professional ecosystem that would contribute to women becoming the new- age front- runners and achievers. I channel this article into three segments: Understanding the role of the ecosystem in shaping its women and their lives, coming in terms with the dynamics of the present day work environment and scooping out path- breaking initiatives to make way for a smarter workplace ecosystem in the future.

Customer is King- Part II

The telecom industry functions quite chaotically. But can't blame it, the telco flow is quite complex. Imagine this, as a consequence of marketing, an entity approaches an operator. This entity then becomes a business opportunity. an opportunity for the operator to make a customer out of the entity. This entity may or may not become a customer, his becoming of this customer, may in fact depend on many factors as in the effectiveness of marketing (hire a zoo zoo or make ARR score your theme music), availability of service in the customer requested site, availability of good design plans and reasonable tariffs, availability of required speeds or equipment (probably a wholesale customer), etc.

In the event of the entity deciding to go with the operator, he now becomes the operator's customer. The entity now moves forward and selects the design plan {Design plans have become so complex these days, that most of the time you either don't understand it or you find it unbelievably difficult to compare it with a design plan of a competitor- so much so that these days, simplicity in design plans themselves has become a differentiator between competitors; for that matter, even simplicity in billing plan has become a differentiator- check this Vodafone postpaid bill payable in 3 simple steps- no log-in, no registration required: https://www.billdesk.com/pgidsk/pgmerc/vodafone/VODAFONE_details.jsp Only Warning: Enter your number correctly, you don't want to pay someone else's bill :-) }.

Coming back, for the chosen design plan, prices (access and usage) will be proposed. If he is fine with the proposal, he moves forward and signs a contract saying that he is willing to pay for the services that he will incur.. {Recollect those bunch of papers that you signed without reading when buying a new sim- which indeed is a contract}. This contract will definitely pump in new revenues. With this, the sales and marketing umbrella of the operator gets over and the project is released downstream for ordering, billing, service delivery, and provisioning. The specifics of all that will be too much telco for an average reader to comprehend {Besides, my work doesn't concern the downstream either, as of now that is}.

Now adding to that, the telco flow up till here was only about an entity who has never been a customer of the operator prior. There could be entities who are customers already but still come back to the operator for additional services or the removal of some existing services. Such entities will be treated as opportunities of a new kind, whose contracts might either pump in or pump out revenues. Though the telco flow happens well within the operator, it is the customer who controls some key triggers. This is pushing the operators into understanding the nuances of new technological solutions.

Bill Shock is one such trigger. Who hasn't met Mr. Bill Shock? Everybody has, at least at some point. According to Wikipedia, Bill shock, popularized in the telecommunications industry as a term for the negative reaction a subscriber can experience if their mobile phone bill has unexpected charges... Bill shock can happen domestically if a user grossly overuses their data applications without an appropriate data plan, or internationally by using data without understanding the roaming charges involved... With an ever-increasing number of people using smartphones (with applications remaining connected to the internet), chances are Bill Shock might become a pandemic. My data usage charges for October were Rs. 562/- to be exact and I ended up paying more than Rs. 1000/- for my mobile postpaid. Now, this could actually be a complication caused by highly complex design and pricing plans which is making it difficult for the customers to exactly know how much they are being charged for the services that they are using. It is generating bad press for the operators, sabotaging the relationships between customers and operators, and will make the customer wary of future sales approaches/ offerings from the operator.

Solutions may exist in providing notifications in real-time about increasing billable usages... Such solutions may also enable better customer interactions and hence better sales. As in: Try using an online application from your smartphone out of your home network, you get a confirmation pop-up, asking you if you still want to go ahead using the application as data charges may increase when used outside the home network... Only if you hit 'yes', the billing starts.

In fact, this need to be notified of anything that happens in the back-end might be directly influenced by the ever-increasing number of people using Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites, quite famous for live notifications ( :-) XYZ has sent you an invite to play Farmville. crap).

Probably a new avenue for business for technology vendors like IBM with a truckload of telecom clients. ;-)

On an ending note, “The difference between customer care and customer service is that customer care is what you do when you screw up and customer service is what you (should) do, day to day”. The goal then is to improve customer service and reduce customer care. Armed with relevant information and real-time speed, the potential to radically enhance the customer experience is here, now.

Relationships- A Matter of Convenience or a Matter of Commitment??

People come.. People go.. He comes.. He goes.. She comes.. She goes.. I wonder if anything or anybody is for keeps... It is not typical of anybody to dissect the relationship with friends, what they mean, why they crossed our lives, why some are no longer as strong as they used to be and why some still pass the rigorous test of time... It is not typical of me to do it either and probably thats why writing this article was kinda eccentric..

The inspiration for this article comes from "How I met your mother"... TOW they celebrate 'Slaps'giving... Ted points out to Robin the fact that they are just pretending to be (and are not actually) great friends because it would be inconvenient not to...  Rings a bell??... Honestly, how many of us have been friends with someone just because it is convenient in being so... As in, being friends with someone who regularly commutes with you... Being friends with someone sitting next to you in a random class... It could be possible to map many such relationships' root cause of existence to some source of selfish convenience... Modern day relationships are complex, have a fuzzy nature and often come with 'conditions apply'... Convenience can camouflage well within the friendship transfigurine...  Such a friendship will blossom, will grow, may evolve into one with commitment and may even last a lifetime... But also in many cases, the friendship lingers on only until there is enough common ground between the two involved parties...  Then it slowly dilutes into a hi- bye kinda relationship, the conversations get heavy, the relationship which once had so much to share has nothing much in common and nothing more to say...

The Cup that Counts- The Euphoria that Follows

The Cup that Counts
Every once in a while, for a brief window of time, junk messages from anonymous dudes who claim to be friends stop, concurrent releases of over the top Indian movies stop, "Wassup?" "Nothin' much" vetti conversations between vetti friends stop, time killing arguments with parents stop and in most of the cases, the underlying reason would be: an ongoing cricket season... The cricket mania keeps one/ more parties involved in the above mentioned activities busy and hence an uncanny dormancy soon follows... A dormancy characterized by a lengthy rendezvous with the idiot 'TV' box, updating unnecessary live cricket status feeds in Facebook, adopting cricket as 'Religion' and Sachin as 'God' and various other mild- moderate- extreme portrayal of fanaticism....

Laugh at your own Risk- Dark Humor

Woody Allen with Scarlett Johanssen and Hugh Jackman in Scoop
Humor derived out of unpleasant and disturbing circumstances can be called dark humor.... It could be disgusting and sardonic to many.... Dark humor is displeasing enough to push all those unease buttons in any normal person, but humorous enough to induce an untimely laugh... It is neither intense nor deep, but falls on a thin line between offending and disturbing... Lots of Woody Allen (Oscar-winning chronicler of urban neuroses- according to Barney Stinson in "I heart New Jersey" episode ;-)) movies have such dark elements... In the movie Scoop, Sid Waterman (played by Allen) claims that he loves London (and all its Indian food), except that the driving is on the wrong side {Referring to London traffic driving on the left- Like in India and many other former British colonies}... He even claims that every time he drives a car in London, he is convinced that he is going to die in a crash... and he does die so in the movie... But there are no scenes / dialogues of mourning there after but only a funny sequence showing Sid playing some magic tricks on the Reaper's ship with a shadowy image of the Grim Reaper** himself... How satirical... How outlandish... How hilarious....

Risk and Regret- The Art of Decision Making II

Risk: Life is inherently risky... Everything we do, comes with a risk... Even me making the decision to write this article has many risks, as in: I run the risk of my article not being read or read but not understood or read, understood but criticized... The point is how much risk can one handle in making a decision... Now, in decision making terms, risk could be the inability of an alternative in reaching the objective... Risk is a direct indication of a highly probable nature of the consequences...  For a vivid picture, let us say I have two investment options: Option (A) and Option (B)... And lets say option (A) is CERTAINLY going to yield me a return of 10 monetary units.. and option (B) is a 50-50 LOTTERY between a return of 30 monetary units and a return of nothing... The expected monetary payoffs* for both the options would be for (A)- 10 and for (B)- 15.... So in monetary terms, option (B) is better... Now lets define some units, Option (A) is a CERTAIN Rs. 10/- and Option (B) is a 50: 50 GAMBLE between Rs.0/- and Rs.30/-... Lets say I go with the expected pay- off theory and I select option (B)...

This or That? The Art of Decision Making I

"The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live" ....True isn't it??.. Our life is like a "Work in Progress", it takes shape in accordance with the decisions we make... It can come in handy if we know the art of making 'situation appropriate' decisions... Let us first skim through the terms involved in a regular decision making process...

This or That??
Objective(s): This is the what drives the whole process.... We all have objectives .. to do this.. to do that... to do this and that... Please note that I am deliberately not using the word "Goal(s)" but only "Objective(s)"  (Primarily because objectives are more crisp and tangible) and also note that there need not be  just one objective, rather there can be multiple no. of objectives each with its own priority.... Sometimes these objectives can be contradictory to one another... Let us take this example for clarity: My objective is to eat tasty and healthy food for lunch.... We have two objectives here: 1) To eat tasty food 2) To eat healthy food... These two objectives might be contradicting each other, like it might be a bit difficult if not impossible to eat something that is both healthy and tasty... Any case maximization of both health and taste would be my ideal requirement... Regarding the priorities, let us assume that I prioritize health before taste...

Women- On the race to Equality

The basic design was to have two things, complementing each other with enough similarities such that they find sufficient common ground and with enough differences such that they fuel the most important necessity of life- Change…  I was recalling the design of humans... The two things being Women and Men…  But somewhere in the process, things dint really go as per the design with one thing starting to exploit over the other…  Sadly even after all these years of humanity, we still don’t exactly conform to the original design…  In fact it would be wise to say that civilization as such can be measured as a degree of conformance to this design… This brings us to the 21st century... This brings us to today… This article does not intend to do root- cause analysis for this non- conformance, if I try to do that, I might have to go back to the ‘long long ago’, so long ago to a time when physical strength and endurance were pre- requisites  in the race to being the fittest and ultimately the dominant of the two sexes…. Neither is this article intended to play the blame game on the opposite sex (Men)… But rather this article tries to propose plans to even out the crests and troughs and establish the beauty of equality (between the sexes)…

According to my analysis… the most optimal solution would be 1) Education 2) Exposure… While Education is necessary, it is not sufficient… It needs to be followed by Exposure… while Exposure without Education does not make any sense… Excuse me for sounding like a communist here, never really intended to sound like one, (I don’t believe in Communism as well) but the Government really needs to make Education compulsory up to 20 years i.e. 3 years minimum college education after school… I specifically use the communistically sounding word “compulsory” here because I firmly believe that the aftermath of Education or the consequences of Education would be a direct enabler in resolving not only this problem, but also so many  other issues plaguing humanity… Poverty, Unemployment, Ignorance to name a few…. Besides, all girls deserve to be educated, Education will bring out the skeptic in her, it will flood her with questions, and it will make her seek out for the answers, for the truth…. And somewhere in the process, it will make her a more equal being… Education without Exposure is literally theory without practice… She needs to exercise all that she has learnt somewhere, somehow, in making something better…. She needs to have a space, a small world, only for herself where she can grow both personally and professionally…  I clearly do not endorse  the option of being a housewife... When a girl decides to become a housewife, she is unknowingly making marriage as the only means of her livelihood which clearly doesn't show her in good light ... I am sure every girl has it in her to become something more than a housewife...  Thankfully there are not many jobs these days that a guy can do and a girl cannot...

On that note, I conclude by appreciating the fact that 21st century is more flexible and open to accept this change trajectory… It understands and recognizes this need to create a more equal humanity and as long as this need is felt, I’ m sure the world is poised to become a more equal place to live in and humanity is poised to become a more conforming race…

Kolkata... The land of mystifying flavors

The odds are never even... The 3Xs are half the time even...... N ofc the evens are always even...... On that note, what would Kolkata be??? Would it be a city locked up in traditions?? Would it be a city that has still not waken up to the 21st century??? Yep, it can be, they have still got trams running here.... Not that I see many people using it for logistics, so am guessing its more there as a tradition, as a symbol of its deep routed British history.... The old city still looks like it desperately wants to cling on to the past and not let go of its traditions.... Be it the Old Howrah Bridge, The Writers Building, Victoria Memorial, The Eden Gardens, Esplanade New Market or even The Howrah Railway Station.... I am probably made to think that its as British as it gets..... I don't think any other place in India comes even close enough to being so reminiscent of the British colonial past as Kolkata.... Does this mean that Kolkata in trying so hard to preserve its regal past, has opted out of the race to modernization... globalization.... ??? The answer is Nope, that can't be it...... At-least not after seeing the new city dotted with towering tech buildings and not after seeing the extremely live-able n posh Salt Lake neighborhood... Mystifying... Indeed... When you know you cannot classify a city under one category, it could only mean one thing... That being, the city has got something for everybody..... It is as much unique and individualistic to make sure that those original vibrant flavors that originally defined and shaped the city are very much retained and it is also as much flexible and adaptive to make sure that new age modernism could snake in smoothly.... The people of Kolkata have done well in making sure that their city portrays one such image....

Something For Today #4

At the temple, there is a poem called "Loss" carved into the stone. It has three words, but the poet has  scratched them out. You cannot read Loss, only feel it.

None of us find as much happiness in this life as we should.

The heart dies a slow death. Shedding each hope like leaves, until one day there are none. No hopes. Nothing remains.

I Me Myself

When I see myself blogging, I realize how much I have, to tell;
When I see myself getting up every time I fall, I realize how optimistic I am;
When I see myself forgiving after every great betrayal, I realize how big- hearted I am;
When I see myself appreciating true beauty, I realize how beautiful I am;
When I see myself giving when I have nothing, I realize how broad minded I am;
When I see myself being empathetic, I realize how non- judgemental I am;
When I see myself moving on after every great disappointment, I realize how strong hearted I am;
And when I see myself in the mirror, I realize how complete I am!!!
